Hot Coffee Arcade: Gaming Coffee Tables from Surface Tension

Written by Luke Thompson

Let’s be honest, we all want a retro arcade cabinet in our homes, but it’s notoriously difficult to justify to our significant others. What’s that honey? You want a massive cabinet to play Turtles in Time on, and you want to put it in the living room? Well Arcade lovers, fear no more, because with Surface Tension’s cunning inventiveness, you can slip a fully working arcade machine into your living room disguised as that most mundane piece of furniture, the coffee table.

Coin Opera 2 – The Poetry Arcade
Written by Luke Thompson
What happens when video-games and poetry collide? Coin Opera 2 seeks to find out. The fundamental life-force behind all creative mediums is the constant will to experiment. The video-games of today are almost indistinguishable from the classics of the ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64 for that very reason. Poetry is no different. While it might seem a world away from Super Mario Bros and the latest Call of Duty, poetry and video-gaming are actually closely intertwined.

AVGN Adventures Review - Pxlbyte

James “The Angry Video Game Nerd” Rolfe, may be the angriest gamer you’ve ever heard. From his dimly lit bedroom, his video reviews of terrible retro games are one part existential despair to two parts toilet humour, and it’s not unusual to see him physically weep with rage over the awful quality of the games he reviews.

AVGN Adventures, his first official game, is a platformer mash-up of all the most frustrating elements of the Nerd’s most hated games, wrapped in a good-looking, fun-to-play package. It should be an impossible result, but somehow, and we suspect black magic may be involved, FreakZone have managed to take the worst aspects of the worst retro games, and make them fun.

Haiku from The Ocarina of Time - Part Eight - Hyrule Castle Town Ruins

(The eighth extract of a walkthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Haiku and Jiyu-shi Haiku. The first part can be found here.)

Adulthood
Boy’s awakening
On the cold temple marble -
At heart, spring remains.

Sheik
In sword’s reflection -
Solitary melodies
On a golden harp.

Re-Dead
Unburied bodies
At the ash-filled
Fountain
Cry for help;
The orphan – fleeing.

Soul Collector
Haunting the guardhouse,
A hollow robe bangs its cane
On a poet’s cage.

Ruined Castle
Industrialized;
Green fields and blossoming trees
Become heat; steel; smoke.

Leaving Town
Ruined bridge
In the castle’s
Poisoned shallows;
Beyond,
The call of fields.

Skyrim - 11/11/13

It’s been exactly two years since Bethesda launched Skyrim, their most ambitious Elder Scrolls game to date, and it’s still one of the most visually stunning games of our generation.

These in-game photographs by DeadEndThrills are testament to the sheer level of detail present in Bethesda’s sprawling open world, which, two years on, has been gradually refined and improved by the many amazing modders in the Skyrim community, who have not only added higher detail textures and models, but whole new quests, monsters, and vast, sprawling landscapes.

Celebrate Skyrim’s second birthday with a trip to the Skyrim Mod Nexus for a look at some of the amazing work being done by the modding community, and then be sure to check out DeadEndThrills for more amazing in-game Skyrim photography!

Artist Interview – Gabriele Brombin (The artist of MirrorMoon EP)

Written by Luke Thompson

Visual achievement is becoming less and less recognisable in modern games. For years, gaming has strived to ascend the mountain peak of photo-realistic graphics, believing that the key to better and more memorable experiences lies in a higher texture resolution, and a more realistic world. As a result, our current generation, (and indeed, our next) has become subject to a dire homogenisation.

Pikachu - Rodrigo Pascoal

These two digital watercolours by Portuguese artist Rodrigo Pascoal embrace Pikachu’s inherent moogle-like cuteness in a way that’ll make even the hardest hearted Pokemon Master go all gooey and weak at the knees. To see more of Rodrigo’s watercolours, take a peek at his blog.

Sly, violent kitsune;
You are an absent father,
Seeking to purchase
Your blind son’s love - after all,
Money is cheaper than time.

Blank eyed and lifeless;
You are a lost little boy
Refusing to grow;
Responsible for nothing,
For no-one – you fade away.

Spooky
Dear walking decay;
You are the homeless orphan
Destiny passed by;
So adrift, you strike the dust
In the grave-keeper’s shadow.

Bunny
Wild fertile idol;
You are the sterile husband’s
Final frantic hope -
Even so, running for hours
Won’t improve your performance.

Truth
Red unblinking eye;
You are everyone’s secrets
And everyone’s shame;
Don’t the fears of these people
Make you fall about giggling?

The Witness - Jonathan Blow

The Witness, the new game from Braid superstar Jonathan Blow, has had more of its expansive, puzzle-filled island exposed in this new set of screenshots.

Running through the PS4 architecture, the first thing you’ll notice about The Witness  is how damn gorgeous the island looks. From the Autumn forest floor to the dense jungles and basalt cliffs, it all looks visually stunning, and as the game is open-world, and not restricted to linear pathways, you’ll be able to explore any part of the island you like from the start.
